Job Interview Tips for your Best Interview




You went to an interview. You thought “I aced it!” – but no call -no second interview and no a job offer?


Did you talk yourself out of that juicy job you had your heart set on? All the interviewer knows about you is what is on your resume.


There are enormous amounts of “interview tips” out there – but let’s cut to the chase. Your job skill level got you in the door. “


Your Interview is to determine the important questions like,”what is special about your skills”, “what is your cultural fit” and “are your people soft-skills a match” for their company.



 How do you avoid getting cut from the first round of interviews ? Sometimes you can’t.

There may already be an ideal candidate in the wings before you get in the door.

An internal candidate or an ex-employee is on the shortlist.

Even so, there are things you can do to help yourself from getting eliminated and get make it to the second round of interviews.


Stay in the hiring race – do these 9 things to keep you in the running to win the job you want.


1. Research the company and the job role.

It’s extremely frustrating for the employer when you haven’t looked the company up on the internet. You need to know the company mission statement or “branding”, its primary products, and have a good understanding of the job offering.

2. Be enthusiastic about the role even if you are making a lateral move.

Nothing is more of a turn-off to a potential employer than a know-it-all, same old, same old candidate who gives yes or no answers and doesn’t sound interested in the job. Even in a lateral move, no two jobs are the same – so don’t project you can do the job with “one hand tied behind your back”.

3. Be ready to “speak” the high points of your skill level

Which parts of your job are you really enthusiastic about? What part of your job are you really good at? Are you interested in advancing your work education and your skill level? Can you point out in your work history how you steadily advanced? Practice your “talking points” so you aren’t searching for answers.

4. Be able to do all the skills on your resume – no fibbing!

Don’t say you are a whiz at Excel if you haven’t set eyes on a spreadsheet since your basic course. Don’t say you are an outside sales rep if you’re an account manager who went to a few client meetings with the outside sales rep and you are actually an inside sales rep.

5. Know what your “market value” salary is.

Don’t say you want 10 or 15K more than the job is worth. Ask around before you get there and find out in the low, medium or high range this company is compared to their peers. People likely won’t tell you their salaries, but most can give you a range. And chances are the prospective employer knows what you are currently earning anyhow. The quick way to lose a job is to over price yourself.

6. Be flexible

Stay open to start times, specific job descriptions and job responsibilities. Starting off by saying what you will and won’t do before you know the in-depth job structure never works. Let the employer give you the full picture before you decide if this is the job for you.

7. Stay positive in your comments about your current employer and co-workers.

If that’s hard to do, practice before your interview. If you will bad-mouth your last employer, you’ll probably bad-mouth a new one, and what does that say about you? Even if you’ve left a job that’s a horror story, there are professional ways to describe it.

8. Be able to give reasons for employment gaps.

Watch your presentation with this one. If your timeout was for health reason, keep it simple and sound positive about your current health. Whatever the circumstances,  an Employer wants to confirm you are ready for and interested in full-time employment.

9. Keep a list of the jobs and the companies you’ve applied for.


When you get “the interview” call – no potential employer is impressed to be told you said – “what job and company is that?” Employers know people apply for many jobs. Try to have each one believe this one is the one you want.

These 9 points will help open the door to a second interview and that great new job want.
